Corporate Background
A Squared Bookkeepers is based in Old Town Pasadena and serves small and mid-sized businesses throughout LA County. Our clients tend to be contractors, skilled trades, property services companies, and real estate operators. What they have in common is that they are past the point where basic bookkeeping is enough but not large enough to justify a full accounting department.
That middle ground is where things usually break. Transactions get recorded but the reporting doesn't tell you anything useful. Job costs get tracked inconsistently. Payroll eats up a full day that should have been spent running the business. Books that looked fine all year have gaps that only surface when a lender, a partner, or the tax preparer starts asking real questions.
We built this firm to handle that middle ground properly. Institutional real estate and construction accounting experience gives us the ability to set up efficient processes and catch the things that normally would get missed.
Our pricing and expectations are clear and set at the start of any engagement. Those basics matter and we don't treat them as extras.
Meet The Owner
I'm Dennis, owner of A Squared Bookkeepers. I've spent over 20 years in accounting, most of it concentrated in real estate development and construction.
Nearly a decade of that was at Alexandria Real Estate Equities, an S&P 500 REIT. I managed development accounting across five regions, produced joint venture reporting, oversaw construction draw packages, and helped grow the development accounting team to fifteen people. After Alexandria, I took a senior role at a real estate development firm and built the entire accounting function from scratch, establishing AP workflows, ownership reporting, and internal controls. During that work I uncovered a $4M cost that had never been reported, and I led a full conversion of the books from Excel into Yardi.
Before real estate, I worked in construction accounting. I managed payroll for 200+ employees across union and non-union crews, built job cost reporting from the ground up, and replaced manual payroll at one firm with an electronic time tracking system that fed directly into QuickBooks.
That background shaped how I approach small business work. Details matter. Clean systems matter. Catching what others miss matters. Most of my clients are contractors, trades operators, property services companies, and real estate investors, which is no accident. The problems they deal with every day are problems I've spent a career solving.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and an MBA from West Virginia University. If you have questions about your books or your business, you can reach me directly any time.
